The county of Los Angeles’ animal community has set a commendable goal for the month of December. Sponsored by the Best Friend’s Animal Society’s No Kill L.A. initiative, the organization is leading a campaign for a “No Kill December.”
“This can be the first month that no healthy and treatable animals are killed in our city shelters,” the society said.
The holidays are a popular time for purchasing animal companions for yourself or as a gift. However, these purchases are often from pet stores which means a shelter animal is left to remain homeless and await euthanasia. BFAS is asking L.A. residents and animal lovers alike “to save a life by adopting, fostering, donating or volunteering.”
According to the non-profit, there are many simple ways to help a shelter animal. If you are planning to welcome a new furry friend into your home, there are six shelters in the area and new technologies allow animal guardians to find the perfect pet without even leaving their computer.
Through December 23rd, animal adopters can also receive a discount on 12 types of companions thanks to the Found Animals Foundation’s “12 pets of Christmas” promotion.
If you cannot commit to adopting but are still passionate about saving animals’ lives, you can foster companions or volunteer your time.
There are many ways to volunteer including photographing the animals, transporting, phone assistance or simply spreading the word. An animal lover can also donate to the NKLA campaign.
A compassionate animal advocate, Ellen DeGeneres is an avid supporter of the December campaign. She tweeted to her over 15 million fans asking them not to let any animals die this month.
Dancing With The Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba, a devoted rescuer, also used her social networking power to give her fans the following message: “Let’s make december a NO KILL MONTH!!! No killing at any shelter. WE can do this!! FOSTER, DO NOT BUY PETS FROM PET STORES this month.”
This is a beautiful, achievable campaign that we support and believe in. No animal deserves to be put to sleep simply because he/she cannot find a home. Do your part this month and be a member of the NKLA initiative by making a donation to NKLA or adopting an animal companion.
